This edition of Latin Jazz gives us a sample of the genre from different points of the Latin diaspora.
We have picked tunes of well-known artists from Cuba, the United States (New York, California), Puerto Rico, and Canada. Each artist blending in their unique influence, even in well-known, mainstream classics.
It is worth noting that some of these Latin Jazz greats are no longer with us. However they left a enormous cultural legacy for us to enjoy. Such is the case of Cuban pianist Emiliano Salvador, also Cubans trombonist Juan Pablo Torres and conga player Francisco Aguabella, and American vibraphone great Cal Tjader.

Esta edicion de jazz latino nos brinda un muestra de la interpretacion de este genero desde distintos puntos del mapa musical latinoamericano. Hemos escogido numeros reconicidos artistas de Cuba, Estados Unidos (Nueva York, California), Puerto Rico y Canada. Cada cual con una influencia unica, aun cuando se trata de temas clasicos y consagrados.
Cabe mencionar que varios de estos grandes del jazz latino ya no estan con nosotros, aunque nos han dejado una enorme herencia culturar para disfrutar. Carnival is celebrated in many parts of the world (Brazil being the
most famous, of course). Carnival is also serious business throughout
the Caribbean and Latin America.
I could go into a lengthy discussion of carnival and its origins. However, the best way to explain and understand carnival as an expression of the human spirit is experimenting it oneself. The next best thing, of course, is through its music.
For the occasion we have selected Soca from Trinidad and Tobago, some of the most energizing carnival music in the world.

Carnaval se celebra en muchos lugares alrededor del mundo (Brasil, por supuesto, es el mas famoso). Carnaval es tambien un asunto importante en el Caribe y America Latina.
Podriamos ahondar en una discusion sobre el carnaval y sus origenes. Sin embargo, la mejor forma de explicar y enter el carnaval como forma de expresion del espiritu humano es experimentarlo en carne propia, en vivo y en directo. De no ser posible, lo mejor es conocerlo a traves de su musica, por supuesto.
Para esta ocasion hemos escogido musica Soca de Trinidad y Tobago, musica con fuerza y dinamismo. Musica de carnaval.

La rumba es una colleccion tanto de ritmos musicales como de estilos de baile popular. Sus origines estan en Africa y fueron traidos a Cuba mediate el trafico de esclavos a la isla.
La instrumentacion de la rumba consiste fundamentalmente de tres tumbadoras, la clave y dos palitos que repiquetean sobre una caja de madera (guagua). Dos de los tambores (el salidor (el mas grave) y el tres-dos (medio)) marcan el ritmo, mientras el tercero (el quinto, el mas agudo) improvisa toques para animar a los bailadores.
Existen tres modalidades en la rumba cubana: el Yambu, la Columbia y el Guaguanco.
El Yambú tiene un origen urbano y parece ser uno de los estilos más antiguos, pues existen referencias sobre el mismo desde mediados del siglo XIX. Su aire es lento. Se inicia con un lalaleo coreado (sílabas repetidas a manera de clarinada) llamado Diana.
La Columbia por lo general es un baile exclusivo de hombres, aunque algunas mujeres se hicieron famosas por su interpretación del mismo. El origen rural de este género es indudable. El aire de la Columbia "es rápido pero asentado". Uno de los tambores, el Quinto, debe subrayar cada movimiento hecho por los bailadores, requiriéndose que su tocador sea más experto, por la variedad de golpes que deberá marcar.
De las tres variantes el guaguancó es la más elaborada, tanto musical como en lo referente a los textos. El tempo del guaguancó es levemente más lento que el de la columbia y más rápido que el yambú. El guaguancó es danza típica de los barrios negros de la ciudad de La Habana. En el baile se representa la persecución amorosa del hombre a la mujer: él deseando Vacunarla, y ella intentando picarescamente protegerse del ataque. En esta persecución y huída de profundo contenido erótico se demuestra la habilidad danzaria de la pareja.
La rumba es afirmacion positiva de la cultura cubana y enlace inquebrantable de esta a la cultura africana.

Rumba is a collection of musical rhythms and dance styles. Its origins are in Africa and were brought to Cuba through the slaves trade.
The instruments to play rumba consist of three tumbadoras (hand drums), clave (wooden sticks), and guagua (slimmer wooden sticks used to hit a wooden box). Two of the tumbadoras (the low-toned 'salidor' and the mid-toned 'tres-dos') keep the rhytm, while the third tumbadora (the high-toned 'quinto') improvises to the dancers' steps.
There are three types of rumbas: Yambu, Columbia, and Guaguanco.
Yambu is of urban origin and seems to be one of the oldest styles. There are references of Yambu dating back to the 19th century. Its tempo is slow. It begins with a few syllables chant repeated several times called 'Diana'.
Columbia is generally a dance exclusively for males, although some women have achieved fame dancing Columbia. Its is of rural origin. Columbia's tempo is fast but steady. The Quito drum highlights each move made by the dancers, which requires a high level of drumming skills.
Guaguanco is the most elaborate of the three rumba styles, musically as well as in terms of lyrics. Guaguanco's tempo is slightly slower than Columbia's and faster than Yambu's. It is a dance hailing from the black neighborhoods in La Habana. The dance represents the man's wish to courtship the woman: he wants to 'posses' her (vacunarla) and she tries to protect herself from his attempts. This back and forward has an evident erotic approach which serves to showcase the couples dancing skills.
Rumba is positive affirmation of the Cuban culture and an unbreakable link between Cuban culture and its African roots.
