Buscando en mi coleccion de musica el otro dia me encontre con algunos cortes de soukous que hace muchos anhos me dio un amigo (Jakob). Desafortunadamente no encontre la documentacion correspondiente; es decir, no tengo no los titulos de las canciones, ni sus interpretes. Y como yo no hablo lingala se me dificulta investigar al respecto. Solamente reconozco la voz y el estilo inconfundible del gran Papa Wemba.
A pesar de la falta de informacion, pense que eso no era excusa para dejar de compartir con la audiencia tan buena musica. Asi que con el permiso de los artistas, aqui esta esta de edicion de Soukous Peligorsos #3.
Roaming through my music collection the other day, I ran into some soukous music given to me many years back by a friend (Jakob). Unfortunately, I could not find the respective documentation; in other words, I do not have the song titles nor the artists' names. And as I do not speak lingala, I would have a hard time researching the information. I can only recognize the unmistaken voice and style of the great Papa Wemba.
Lack of information no withstanding, I thought that it was not an excuse for not sharing such great music. So with the forgiveness of the artists involved, this is Soukous Trouble #3.

La legendaria cantante sudafricana Miriam Makeba ha muerto a la edad de 76 años de edad. 10/11/2008
Habia terminado su presentacion en un concierto cerca de la
localidad sureña de Caserta, reporto la agencia noticiosa Ansa. El
concieto era en apoyo de Roberto Saviano, el escritor que expuso a la
mafia en sus escritos y que ha sido subsecuentemente amenazado de
muerte. Ansa reporto que Makeba sufrio un ataque cardiaco.
'Mama Africa'
Miriam
Makeba nacio en Johannesburg el 4 de marzo de 1932 y fue una de las
figuras principales contra el apartheid. Su carrera artistica empezo
en los años 50s fusionando jazz con canciones tradicionales de
Sudafrica.
Recibio notariedad internacional en 1959 durante una gira por los
Estados Unidos con el grupo sudafricano Manhattan Brothers. Fue
forzada al exilio poco tiempo despues cuando su pasaporte le fue
revocado luego de aparecer en un documental anti-apartheid y no volvio
a su pais hasta que Nelson Mandela fue liberado de prision.
Makeba fue la primera artista africana en ganar un premio Grammy,
premio que compartio con Harry Belafonte en 1965. Fue la primera
estrella africana con alcance global, dijo Richard Hamilton de la BBC,
combinando estilos distintos mucho antes que la frase 'world music'
(musica global) fuera concebido.
Luego de su divorcio del musico sudafricano Hugh Masekela se caso
con el activista norteamericano de los derechos civiles Stokely
Carmichael.Fue durante su exilio en los Estados Unidos que publico sus interpretaciones mas notables, Pata Pata y el Click Song.
'Uno canta sobre lo que te rodea', dijo. 'Nuestro entorno ha sido
siempre de sufrimiento por causa del apartheid y el racismo que existe
en nuestro pais. Eso influye todo'.
Ha sido por su dedicacion a las causas de su continente natal que a Miriam Makeba se le ha conocido como Mama Africa.

She had just taken part in a concert near the southern town of Caserta, the Ansa news agency reported.
The concert was on behalf of Roberto Saviano, the author of an expose

'Mama Africa'
Ms Makeba was born in Johannesburg on 4 March 1932 and was a leading symbol in the struggle against apartheid. Her singing career started in the 1950s as she mixed jazz with traditional South African songs.
She came to international attention in 1959 during a tour of the United
States with the South African group the Manhattan Brothers. She was forced into exile soon after when her passport
was revoked after starring in an anti-apartheid documentary and did not
return to her native country until Nelson Mandela was released from
prison.
Makeba was the first black African woman to win a Grammy Award, which she shared with Harry Belafonte in 1965. She was African music's first world star, says the BBC's Richard
Hamilton, blending different styles long before the phrase "world
music" was coined.
After her divorce from fellow South African musician
Hugh Masekela she married American civil rights activist Stokely
Carmichael. It was while living in exile in the US that she released her most famous songs, Pata Pata and the Click Song.
"You sing about those things that surround you," she said. "Our
surrounding has always been that of suffering from apartheid and the
racism that exists in our country. So our music has to be affected by
all that."
It was because of this dedication to her home continent that Miriam Makeba became known as Mama Africa.
This is the second batch of soukous. The first one went out on 08/20/2008. I recommend you check them out. For this edition we have a mix of old and more recent, as well as CDR and Congo-based artists. I am including a couple of tunes for which I do not have any kind of information, they are just simply great tunes. If anyone recognizes them, please send me a note to provide the duly deserved credits.
Not much to write this week, just a bunch of great music to listen and dance to. So without much delay, here it is -- Soukous Trouble #2.

Este es la segunda entrega de soukous. La primera se edito en el 08/20/2008. Les recomiendo le den un vistazo. Para esta segunda edicion tenemos una mezcla de lo viejo y cosas mas recientes; asi como artista de la RDC y del Congo.
Incluimos dos canciones para las cuales no tenemos informacion alguna con respecto a sus nombres o interpretes, simplemente son muy buenos.
Si alguien las llega a reconocer, les agradeceria me enviaran una nota con la informacion para asignar los creditos correspondientes.
Hay poco que escribir esta semana, solo musica buenisima para escuchar y bailar. Asi que sin mas, aqui va -- Soukous Peligrosos #2.
La idea de la serie MundoMix es presentar artistas y generos musicales no muy comunes. Los tipos de buena musica que no son necesariamente faciles de encontrar ni en la mayoria de las tiendas de musica, ni en los medios de difusion convencionales.
Para este MundoMix #5 hemos escogido generos, artistas y estilos muy diversos. Esto en si representa una combinacion unica. Pero detro de los numeros que hemos escogidos hay un par de colaboraciones entre musicos que normalmente no nos imaginariamos juntos. Tal es el caso del grupo mexicano Control Machete tocando con musicos cubanos del Buena Vista Social Club en Danzon. Igualmente, la colaboracion de Ruben Blades con el grupo vocal brasileno Boca Livre en una adaptacion de Jiri Son Bali (cancion tradicional de Mali) combinandola con salsa estilo Nueva York.
El resto de este MundoMix lo conforman ritmos tales como hip-hop cubano, afro-pop, township jive, bhangra/reggae, blues y mucho mas...

The idea behind MundoMix is to showcase not commonly found artists and musical genres. The kind of great music not easily found in most record stores or that is not played in mainstream media.
For this MundoMix #5 we have selected a very diversed group of artists, genres, and musical styles. This in and on itself represents a unique blend. But in this musical mix we have chosen a couple of collabolations by musicians that one would not normally imagine together. Such is the case of the Mexican group Control Machete playing with Cuba's Buena Vista Social Club musicians. Also, the collaboration of Panamaniam star Ruben Blades and Brazilian vocal group Boca Livre in an adaptacion of Jiri Son Bali (a Mali folk song) mixed with New York style salsa.
The rest of this MundoMix , as if not enough, consists of Cuban hip-hop, afro-pop, township jive, bhangra/reggae, blues, and much more...

For this MundoMix we will travel around the world with lounging music. But under no circumstance slow/reflective music has to be boring. Quite the opposite, these tunes show that soft, relaxing music can also be very rhythmic, as contradictory as it might sound.
No one better to illustrate this point that Brazilian music. To that effect we have included music from samba queen Beth Carvalho and the group Os Tribalistas (Marisa Monte, Arnaldo Antunes, and Carlinhos Brown). African artists are not far behind and to show their lounge/relaxing music talents we are including work from the master, Baaba Maal and the South African group Juluka (Johnny Clegg/Sipho Mchunu).
I would like to bring special attention to the work of Gisela Baum, who provides a magnificent and interesting fusion of Argentinian folklore and jazz.
To round up this MundoMix we have included music from Haiti and Spain. So zero stress and lets lounge with this MundoMix #4.

Para este MundoMix recorreremos el mundo con musica suave para relajarse. Pero por ningun motivo por ser musica suave y reflexiva es musica aburrida. Todo lo contrario, estas selecciones muestran que la musica suave y relajante tambien puede ser sumamente ritmica aunque parezca una contradiccion.
Nadie mejor para demostrar este punto que la musica brasilena. Para esto hemos incluido musica de la reina del samba, Beth Carvalho y el grupo Os Tribalistas (Marisa Monte, Arnaldo Antunes y Carlinhos Brown). Los africanos no se quedan atras y para ilustrar su talento en este tipo de musica hemos incluido trabajos de Baaba Maal y el grupo sudafricano Juluka (Johnny Clegg/Sipho Mchunu).
Me gustaria resaltar el trabajo de Gisela Baum quien fusiona magnificamente el folklore argentino con jazz y la cancion latinoamericana.

Mencionar la palabra soukous solo significa una cosa...musica para bailar y gozar!!! Una mezcla inigualable de ritmo, melodia y harmonias basada una mixtura infernal de percusion, guitarras y voces.
Soukous (tambien conocido como Lingala o Congo y anteriormente como rumba Africana (aunque en realidad esta mas relacionada al son cubano que a la rumba cubana)) es un genero musical que surge de las antiguas colonias belgas conocidas como el Congo Belga (hoy en dia son la Republica del Congo y la Republica Democratica del Congo) durante los anhos 30s e inicios de los 40s. Desde entoces esta musica ha disfrutado de gran popularidad en el ambito africano.
"Soukous" (se dice que se deriva del termino frances "secouer" -- sacudirse) era el nombre de un baile popular en el Congo a finales de los 60s. Aunque el genero musical se conocio inicialmente como "rumba" o "rumba africana", el termino "soukous" se utiliza para identificar este tipo de musica y sus subsecuentes evoluciones.
Durante los 80s y principios de los 90s, un estilo mas dinamico de soukous conocido como kwassa kwassa (Kanda Bongo Man) -- llamado asi por el nombre de un baile -- se puso de moda. Mas recientemente, un estilo llamado ndombolo (Koffi Olomide) -- tambien nombrado por una forma de bailar -- se ha puesto de moda. Es durante este periodo que los soukous alcanzan una dimension internacional con muchas de sus grandes figuras emigrando al exterior para grabar y hacer carrera en el exterior, principalmente en Paris y otros centros culturales europeos.
Esta primera entrega de soukous es una pequena muestra de este maravilloso genero musical y resalta solo algunos de los muchos y talentosos artistas y groupos. De seguro mostraremos mas soukous en el futuro...

Soukous (also known as Lingala or Congo, and previously as African rumba (not actually related to Cuban rumba but to Cuban son) ) is a musical genre that originated in the two former colonies of the Belgian Congo (today's Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo) during the 1930s and early 1940s, and which has gained popularity throughout Africa.
"Soukous" (said to be a derivative of the French word secouer, to shake) was originally the name of a dance popular in the Congos in the late 1960s, and danced to an African version of rumba. Although the genre was initially known as rumba (sometimes termed specifically as African rumba), the term "soukous" has come to refer to African rumba and its subsequent developments.
In the 1980s and early 1990s, a fast-paced style of soukous known as kwassa kwassa (Kanda Bongo Man) – named after a popular dance -- was popular. Lately, a style called ndombolo (Koffi Olomide), also named after a dance, is popular. It is during this period that soukous goes international with many musicians relocating to record and build careers away from home, mainly in Paris and other European cultural centers.
This first soukous installment is just a small sampler of this wonderful music style and it showcases some of its talented artists and groups. More will certainly follow....

Como su nombre suguiere, MundoMix pretende ser un cocktail de cosas. Por lo tanto incluye de todo un poco - ritmos diversos, sonidos diversos, estilos diversos, epocas diversas. Pero lo que todas las partes tienen en comun es creatividad, excelencia y calidad.
En este primer MundoMix encontraran musica del cantautor cubano y una de las figuras principales del movimiento de la Nueva Trova cubana Silvio Rodriguez (en esta ocasion con un numbero bastante ritmico basado en un son que recuerda el estilo de Los Van Van), de una institucion de la salsa como lo son el duo Willie Colon/Hector Lavoe y de la colaboracion de la banda argentina Los Pericos (considerados como una de las mejores bandas latinas en el genero reggae, a tal punto de ser invitados a los principales festivales de esta musica en Jamaica) con la estrella del reggae/dance hall, Buju Banton.
Todo esto redondeado por kompa haitiano, afro-pop, rock de Espana y algo diferente, una fusion afrocubana/urbana (P18), como si fuera poco.
As the name suggests, MundoMix is intended to be a cocktail of sorts. Therefore, it includes a little bit of everything - different rythms, different sounds, different styles, different eras. But what all ingredients have in common is creativity, excellence, and quality.
In this first MundoMix you will find music from cuban singer/songwriter and key figure in the cuban Nueva Trova music movement, Silvio Rodriguez (this time with a quite rythmic tune which reminds you of the Los Van Van sound), from what is an institution in the salsa world, the duo of Willie Colon/Hector Lavoe, and the extraordinary collaboration between Los Pericos(considered one of the best latin reggae bands, such that they are often invited to perform on the main reggae festivals in Jamaica) and dance hall star Buju Banton.
All that plus hatian kompa, afro-pop from Papa Wemba, rock from Spain, and something different, and an afrocuban/urban beat fusion from P18.
En esta ocasion quiero alejarme un poco de la salsa pero sin dejar lo ritmico. Este mosaico de ritmos incluye reggae, merengue, soukous, entre otros; en todo los casos con artistas/grupos de primer orden en su respectivos generos. Es de destacar la musica de Black Stalin (cinco veces ganador de la competencia nacional de calipso en Trinidady y Tobago), Javier Garcia y la colaboracion de los brasilenos Carlinhos Brown y Marissa Monte con el angolano Bonga en Mulemba Xangola. Bueno esto es para gozarlo y bailarlo.

This time I want to take a break from salsa but without moving away from rythm. This mosaic of rythms includes reggae, merengue, soukous, among others. In all instaces these artists/groups represent some of the top performers in their respective genres. I must highlight the works of Black Stalin (5-time winner of the Trinidad and Tobago national calypso championsip), Javier Garcia and the excellent collaboration of Carlinhos Brown and Marissa Monte (Brasil) with Angolan star Bonga in Mulemba Xangola.
